Ability to Work With the Other side
When a President has the ability to work with the other side they are able to truly imagine and understand the views from others, and they know how to compromise during times of disagreements. This is really more than just Democrats working with Republicans or vice versa. This can be those from other countries, friends or foes. A President can also show this top quality by kindness, understanding, and know when to "agree to disagree."
1. President Barack Obama
Barack Obama is a calm and even-tempered President. He has a great ability to work and compromise with others. During his presidential election, he ran against Hillary Clinton, and after he won Obama appoint Clinton secretary of state. One proposal Obama is known for is his health care reform. Democrats and Republicans were having trouble about agreements with the reform proposal, but he wanted to make a compromise. Barack Obama was willing to compromise with the opposition Republicans on healthcare reform legislation because he wanted the two parties to work together. He also knew that the reform must go forward and that resolving differences was the best solution.
2. PResident Bill Clinton
Bill Clinton mutually distrusted then Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, but this did not stop Clinton from working with his opposing side. The political foes made a secret pact to fix the nation’s most problematic programs such as Social Security. They were able to even bring millions of new jobs to the United States, and they lowered the unemployment rate. The two were bound together by their flaws and politician relationship. Clinton and Gingrich were able to compromise and work together for the sake of the country.
3. President Lyndon B. Johnson
Lyndon B. Johnson knew how to correctly work with the opposition when he was President. He teamed up with Republican Senator Everett Dirksen to pass civil rights legislation over the objections of Southern Democrats. As a Democratic president, Johnson relied upon the Republican senator Dirksen. Johnson was not able to count on the support of Southern Democratic senators because many of them supported segregation. Dirksen was able to help Johnson improve the chances of the bill’s passage of civil rights.
4. President Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was constantly willing to see the viewpoint of any opposing side. He would take into great consideration of any proposals they had, and would think of how it would then affect the United States. Lincoln knew when to make a compromise or stand firm with the issue on the side he already believed in. He could work with the opposing political party during his time in the most articulate manner.
5. President Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan was able to gain popularity and improve relations with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. He recognized the change in the direction of the Soviet leadership with Mikhail Gorbachev, and shifted to diplomacy and encouraged leader to pursue substantial arms agreements. Reagan’s goal was to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons, and started discussions with Gorbachev to start nuclear disarmament. He and Gorbachev held four summit conferences, and soon negotiated a treaty that stopped an intermediate range nuclear missiles attack. Ronald Reagan was successfully brought a peaceful end to the Cold War.
